42nd Annual Commencement Celebrates Largest Graduating Class in UMDNJ History
UMDNJ Interim President Denise V. Rodgers, MD, led the ceremonies and delivered the keynote address to the graduates and their guests who gathered at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford.
Dr. Rodgers spoke of the great variety of degrees and professional certificates that graduating students were receiving from UMDNJ's eight professional schools throughout the state, and how the breadth of UMDNJ is of great value to America's health care system that is moving rapidly toward greater collaboration among health professionals. "I am proud that we train such a wide ranging number of health professionals at UMDNJ," said Dr. Rodgers, who told the graduates, "You will be called upon to work as members of a team. It is imperative that you understand and respect all of the professionals who contribute to the care of patients and to the treatment of disease because this is the foundation upon which high-quality care is provided."
The graduates also heard from Kevin M. Barry, MD, chairperson of the UMDNJ Board of Trustees. Speaking for the Board, Dr. Barry highlighted the extraordinary professional educations the graduating students had just received, "I hope you always remember you are being given a precious gift and are privileged to be able to use it," said Dr. Barry. "I expect from you to use that gift with integrity, passion and professionalism for the betterment of the world in which we live."
