OPT Reporting Responsibilities
While on OPT you are required to report certain information to keep your immigration record up to date. While on OPT students MUST report in writing (email, fax or regular mail) any change in the following items to the Office of International Services:
EMPLOYMENT REPORTING (POST-COMPLETION and STEM OPT ONLY)
Students are required to report any change in employment (start, end, change of employer, or when temporarily unemployed). The Office of International Services recommends submitting OPT employment reporting within 10 days of any change. Submit a completed OPT Employment Update Form to complete the reporting requirement.
- Name of Employer
- Address of Place of Employment (where you will physically be working)
- Contact Information of Employer (Supervisor Name, Phone #, and email address)
- Start and/or End Date of Employment
- Type of Employment (full-time, multiple "gigs", etc.) Keep in mind that post-completion OPT employment (paid or unpaid) must be 20 hours or more a week.
SIX MONTH EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION (STEM OPT ONLY)
STEM OPT recipients must also make a "validation report" to the DSO every six months starting from the date the 24-month extension begins and ending when the student's F-1 status ends, the student changes educational levels at the same school, the student transfers to another school, or the 24-month OPT extension ends, whichever is first. The report is due to the OIS within 10 business days of each 6 month deadline.
The OPT Employment Update Form must include the student's:
- Full legal name
- Current mailing and residential address
- Name and address of the current employer
- Date the student began working for the current employer
- Relevance to program
REMINDER: The below updates are required at all times while in F-1 status. These are requirements even when not authorized for OPT.
Local residential address MUST be reported within 10 days of the change. See Change of Address Form.
CHANGE IN NAME
If you change your name, submit an updated copy of your passport biographical page to OIS and an updated I-20 will be issued to you.
CHANGE IN IMMIGRATION STATUS
If you have been approved for a change of status in the U.S., please notify OIS upon receipt of the approval notice from USCIS. Forward (via mail/fax/email) a copy
of the approval notice.
Students are required to notify OIS if they will finish their F-1 status before the end date on the EAD card. If you decide to end your OPT early and leave the U.S., please notify OIS by sending an email at least 30 days prior to when you intend to leave the U.S.
