November 7, 2016

Members of the RBHS Community:

I am delighted to announce that Steven K. Libutti, MD has accepted the position of Director of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. In a further major development of our partnership with the RWJBarnabas Health System, Dr. Libutti will also accept an assignment to serve as Senior Vice President, Oncology Service Line for the system. He will formally join Rutgers in all of these capacities in very early 2017.

A surgical oncologist, Dr. Libutti currently serves as the Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in New York City where he is Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Professor in the Department of Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Montefiore Health System. Dr. Libutti’s clinical practice focuses on the management of malignancies of the liver, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract. He is an internationally known expert in endocrine surgery and in the management of neuroendocrine tumors. His research focuses on developing novel cancer therapies through an understanding of the tumor microenvironment and tumor neovascular formation, and angiogenesis. He has been funded by both the intramural and extramural National Cancer Institute (NCI) since 1996. While at Montefiore, Dr. Libutti helped to guide the development of multidisciplinary, disease-focused teams within the Center for Cancer Care dedicated to the coordinated and integrated care of patients. Dr. Libutti also guided the implementation of this model across the Montefiore Health System. He is the author of over 270 peer reviewed journal articles, holds seven U.S. patents, and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Cancer Gene Therapy. He is the recipient of both NCI and National Institutes of Health Director’s Awards. Recognized as a top doctor and top cancer doctor by Castle Connelly, he is also regularly named one of the best doctors in New York by New York Magazine.

A graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Libutti received his MD from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Following his residency in surgery, he completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery in the Surgery Branch at the NCI and was ultimately a tenured Senior Investigator and Chief of the Tumor Angiogenesis Section in the Surgery Branch, NCI. From 1995 to 2010, Dr. Libutti was commissioned in the Reserve Corps of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He was ultimately promoted to Captain and served as a surgeon at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center before decommissioning.

Dr. Libutti was selected through a competitive national search process where we had the good fortune to meet with a panel of highly qualified candidates. With this successful outcome, I want to extend my thanks and congratulations to our search committee chair Dean Sherine Gabriel of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. I also want to thank the members of the search committee, listed below, for their time and dedication in identifying a superlative candidate to be Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

During this period, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey was led by Interim Director Bruce Haffty, MD. We thank Dr. Haffty for his leadership during this time of transition. He will continue in his position as Chair of Radiation Oncology full time.

As the leader of the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey, Dr. Libutti will bring his significant talents and experience to implement a vision to lead Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey to national prominence, as well as expanding its impact throughout the RWJBarnabas Health System. We look forward to this new chapter in the history of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and together we will make an exceptional program even better.

Sincerely,

Brian L. Strom, MD, MPH
