A brief return to California in the early 2000s reacquainted her with her desire to teach. She earned her MA in Teaching English from Brooklyn College while teaching high school through the New York City Teaching Fellows Program.

Crystal has been teaching in the Writing Program of Rutgers-Newark and the Humanities Department of NJIT since 2007, earning a second MA in English Literature from Rutgers-Newark in 2009. She is the 2013-2014 President of the New Jersey College English Association. Based on her own experiences as an alternative-track teacher, she plans to focus her research on teacher preparation programs in urban school districts.
